The San Marcos Regional Animal
Shelter provides free and low-cost services for current pet owners in Hays
County looking to protect their pets from illnesses and unwanted litters.
The shelter hosts an annual
Rabies Clinic, said Animal Services Manager Kara Montiel. Low-cost rabies
shots, pet licensing and micro-chipping are provided for San Marcos residents
at the event.
Rabies shots, required by law,
are $10 for dogs and cats; as required by City Ordinance, all cats, dogs and
ferrets must be registered annually with the City of San Marcos Animal Services
Division, and a lifetime pet license for spayed or neutered pets is available
for $5 at the Rabies Clinic; and pets can be micro-chipped for $20 at the event.
Spay Day, another of the shelter’s
annual events, provides San Marcos residents the opportunity to spay or neuter
their pets without charge.
“We provide the services to the
public for free, but it is first-come, first-served,” Montiel said. “We take
approximately 20 to 30 animals.”
Emancipet, a nonprofit clinic,
visits the shelter twice a month to provide low-cost spay and neutering to Hays
County residents. The procedures are available by appointment. The next opportunity
for residents to visit the Mobile Clinic will be Wednesday, November 27, and appointments can be made on the Emancipet website.
